  • Masculine Archetypes

    4 Masculine Archetypes

    (from the lower right)
Rebirth – Lover – The Source – Warrior – The Golden Lady – King – The Silent Lady – Magician – Transformation.

    Description:

    King, Warrior, Magician, Lover.

The 4 masculine archetypes each with its two shadows, derived from the work of Jungian analysts Robert L. Moore and Douglas Gillette in the book “King, Warrior, Magician, Lover”.
The development of the “subarchetypes”, four tendencies of each main archetype, was done in cooperation with Mr Shereef Bishay, who comissioned the original work.

A website dedicated to this map, updated regularly (currently still under construction).

    The elements

Emerging from a circular window, each of the four central figures represents the balanced co-existence of two complementary qualities.

Each of the two shadows on the lower half of the circle, has access to only one of the two qualities, lacking the other. This is where an unbalanced situation is created, self-destructive and harmful to others.

Around the main circles, the smaller figures are stages between the 4 main archetypes. Finally, the image is completed by the environment, animals, plants and the four elements.

This image was originally intended for two teenage boys. The main characters are the male archetypes, portrayed by men. However, the feminine aspect is also personified and portrayed by female figures, as well as an asexual state.

The total duration of the work was more than 14 months, and the image went through many fundamental transformations, until all the correct elements were found and in place.

    Using the map

I believe this can be useful to any age or gender. Like a map, it illustrates different aspects of life, portrayed by the elements of the picture.
Some ideas for use, apart from decoration:

    • Play a game with a partner
Take your favorite figure and try to guess what would happen if that figure was missing. Do it for other figures too.
I.e. What would happen in that world if the golden lady was missing? Who and what is she for you?
What if the King is absent?
What if the warrior lacks sensitivity?
    • Use it as an actual map to keep track of life’s different aspects.
    • Use it as a tool  for reflection
    • Kick-start a great conversation
  • EXODUS: Event Horizon

    EXODUS: Event Horizon

Exodus is a science fiction game where humans are colonizing the systems around Proxima Centauri. It is a huge game, created by NSKN Games. “Event Horizon” is the third part of the trilogy, and I had a great time making its cover. Many thanks to Philip and Severin for posing as the pilot!

  • SIMURGH on Kickstarter!

Hi everybody, it’s been a long time since I posted an update. It has been a really busy time for me, with many new projects, concerts, travel and sleepless nights! Anyway, this Autumn I made the cover and board artwork for the game “Simurgh” by NSKN games. The game was very successful in Essen, and as soon as the fair was over they immediately started work on the expansion of Simurgh, “Call of the Dragonlord”. I will be posting updates on the artwork process soon, but in the meantime make sure to check the kickstarter campaign for Simurgh:

  • EXODUS ‘Edge of Extinction’ Cover Artwork process part 2

*Note* I accidentally posted again part 1 previously, so I deleted that and repost the link here.
So, here is the second and final part of the artwork process. Enjoy!

  • “EXODUS: Edge of Extinction” is done!

“EXODUS: Edge of Extinction” is done!

It’s been a long time since I posted, very busy time and lots of things going on. Anyway, I am still here and this time I have a video update. The artwork for “EXODUS: Edge of Extinction” is finally finished and you can see my painting process on youtube.

The game is awesome, the NSKN team has done a great job and they are currently running a crowdfunding campaign on kickstarter with some great goodies as stretch goals. To name some, there are stretch goals that add more materials, double sided cards and if their page receives more than 500 shares or 800 likes on facebook, the backers will receive a special, science fiction themed painting signed from me.

It’s happening now, so if you are interested check this out here:

    Concept art for “EXODUS” Expansion

Exodus is a successful science fiction title, published by NSKN Games. The world is inspired from Stanislav Lem’s “the Magellanic Cloud”, and the game features a very sophisticated battle, resource management and economy system.

I am currently working on the illustrations for the 6 remaining human factions and the cover art for the expansion of the game. Here are some concepts of the factions:

  • The History of China

The Podcast History of our World has entered China, and the excellent storytelling of Rob Monaco guides us through the mist of ancient chinese landscapes..

While sketching out the upcoming cover of the pocast series, I came up with this image for the chinese.

For this image I used Inks & the open source software Krita

  • More Gnomes!

The research is coming to an end, I finished the lineart, printed it on a bigger paper and I am now ready for the painting process. Here are some more gnomes, full figure this time. I settled for a 2,5 – 3 heads tall. The last picture is the lineart which I drew in a A5 sized area. Leaving a space around the illustration for perspective lines and other marks is a neat idea I learned from the process of the artist James Gurney. Keeps the lines out of the way and after I draw them I don’t need to worry anymore about finding vanishing points drawn at the other side of the desk!

  • Schrammel Klang Festival in Litschau

This weekend, the beautiful Herrensee lake in lower Austria was filled with music, light and people. Litschau, Austria’s northernmost city, is the birthplace of the traditional “Schrammel” music. In July, the area surrounding the Herrensee and the Herrensee theatre serves as the location for three days of Austrian folk music, sometimes conventional and occasionally eccentric.

    More information here: www.schrammelklang.at

I was invited there by my friend and fellow musician Michael Eipeldauer, who was displaying and selling his guitars at the festival.  He is currently the only person in Vienna who, not only restores, but also displays the traditional Kontra-Guitars in his music shop, where musicians can try them out. His workshop is also there, and of course a respectable amount of awesome classic, acoustic and electric guitars as well!

  • The History of our World podcast

Ancient kings, slaves, stone-age tribes, pharaohs, worshipers, traitors, heroes, gods…beware! The history podcast deals with everything based on facts – the best that can be found anyway – and in a fast-paced, satyrical frenzy that hooks the listener and takes them to a wild race through time and space.

The man behind the microphone is mr. Rob Monaco, and he does a really good job in bringing history alive. Here is a link to his page featuring the episodes along with additional bibliography, ancient music and even links to ancient recipies! I wish him good luck in this great and ambitious project.

    podcasthistoryofourworld.blogspot.co.at

As an illustrator, I am always on the look for something interesting to listen to. When silence is too…distracting, audiobooks and music will do the trick. So, being a person fascinated with history, legend and folklore I was pleasantly surprised when I found his podcast series a few days ago. At some point, while listening to the episodes about the Jewish patriarchs, an image popped in my mind with the speaker talking while chasing the terrified caricatures of the ancient world.

    Well, here it is:

  • KRITA’s campaign is going great!

Let’s take Krita to the next level!

Krita, the free and open source painting application, has grown up and is a great tool for digital artists, with many expressive brushes, HDR painting, filters and much, much more. Take a look at how good our last release was:

Krita is currently avaiable on Windows and Linux. OSX is our super-stretch goal for this project!

KRITA, the open source painting software has launched a kickstarter campaign  in order to support the next development step of the software. Polishing the already extended list of features and adding support for more tablets and even IOS, seem to be the top priorities.

There are just 10 days to go, if you are an artist, art enthousiast or would like to contribute to this remarkable work, you can give your support here:

  • The Gnomes of Knordac!

The Gnomes of Knordac is a new and upcoming game from EGRA games, designed by Jeremy Burnham. The player assumes the role of a industrious gnome, or a team of industrious gnomes who, after looting the treasures of men and digging for precious stones, return to the underground city of Knordac to divide their treasures. To do this, each team builds a powerful golem, magically assembled from a variety of materials. The golems fight over a heap of treasure, and the winner claims the prize and proceeds to the next battle.
